The power of dreams

“I have a dream” where the words. Spoken by someone rebelling against the existing social order. Someone who saw the inherent contradictions within the paradigms of his society and the suffering they created. He saw these contradictions were not being addressed effectively, so shared with the world his dream. A dream so powerful and put into words so eloquently, that while it may not yet be fulfilled completely, it resonated throughout Western civilisation and changed it beyond recognition. It’s impact so enormous, you know exactly what I am talking about, though I have only quoted four words of a speech.

Again we have reached an episode where the inherent contradictions within the Western paradigms are slowly but surely unravelling its civilisation. Like the dreamer in the previous paragraph I believe these contradictions aren’t being addressed in an effective manner. Public and political discourse on almost every issue is one dimensional, binary and focussed on the very short term. Discussion rarely supersedes day to day news and worries, is generally centred around a plan and framed “pro/contra”. The restricted spatial formation of political discourse allows a mentality to prevail, and to be taken for granted, that is out of touch with reality. It also deprives us of a positive, credible and powerful vision for the future.

While we overemphasize and overestimate the short term possibilities of a plan, we tend to underestimate the long term potential of a paradigm shift. And though paradigm shifts seem hard to bring about, history is riddled with them. Just ponder for a moment the aggregate effect on behaviour and decision making of that famous dream I quoted. Sometimes, envisioning the way things ought to be can inspire people to work at making it that way.

Our civilisation is in a state of flux. During such times, uncertainty is high and control is weakened, thus forming a friendly environment for reorganisation and innovation. It is at times like this that individual cells, individual people have the greatest chance of influencing events. At times like this, dreams can have their greatest impact. I hope this site will be a place for dreams. A place where dreamers learn to dream effectively, a place to explore the power of dreams and to dream up the future. So I invite you to share your dreams and nightmares, to envision the world you want to live in in a couple of decades time and share that vision. Together we can learn to wield the power of dreams and who knows, maybe we will even change the world…

I found this article in the ArXiv today. In it, some applications and implications of recent advances in the reletively new field of sociophysics are discussed. This piece reminds me of a quote I once read of James Trefil:
