USNews.com has a
lengthy piece on Iranian involvement in Iraq, focussing on the post-war period (pity, post-war involvement isn’t that surprising, I'm
mainly interested in the
extent of pre-war involvement).
USNews claims: "… a review of thousands of pages of intelligence
reports by U.S. News reveals the critical role Iran has played in
aiding some elements of the anti-American insurgency after Baghdad
fell--and raises important questions about whether Iran will continue
to try to destabilize Iraq after elections are held. The classified
intelligence reports, covering the period July 2003 through early 2004,
were prepared by the CIA; the Defense Intelligence Agency; the Iraq
Survey Group, the 1,400-person outfit President Bush sent to Iraq to
find weapons of mass destruction; the Coalition Provisional Authority;
and various military commands and units in the field, including the V
Corps and the Pentagon's Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force.
The reports are based on information gathered from Iraqis, Iranian
dissidents, and other sources inside Iraq. U.S. News also reviewed
British intelligence assessments of the postwar phase in Iraq."

Many philosophers have viewed the state as the basic unit of
geopolitical relations. Some (most notably Hegel and his followers)
have gone so far as to personify states and their relations. Lately I
wonder, is this notion of the state just some modernists construct or
does it have some deeper significance. Are we moving towards a
post-modern state?
Robert Cooper of Demos thinks we are. In this piece, a framework for a post-modern state is laid out. Jeremy Rifkin has a different angle, but his "New European Dream" shares a lot of the notions mentioned by Demos. Is the state slowly being redefined?

Het Project New Century (PNC) valt uiteen in drie dimensies. De eerste
dimensie is het nadenken over fundamentele vragen en het geven van
antwoorden daarop in het licht van onze tijd. Het doel is het
ontwikkelen van een visie. De tweede dimensie is het proces dat we
persoonlijk en als groep doormaken om tot antwoorden te komen. Het doel
is meer bewust te worden van de werkelijkheid, onszelf en elkaar. De
derde dimensie is het produceren van geconcretiseerde ideeën over onze
tijd. Het doel is dat we die vastleggen en publiceren.
De eerste dimensie biedt een basis voor het denken. De vragen die
gesteld worden, kunnen steeds op andere wijzen beantwoord worden,
waardoor steeds nieuwe inzichten kunnen ontstaan. Hoe meer inzicht, hoe
beter het beeld van onze tijd uiteindelijk zal worden.
De tweede dimensie gaat over de sociale en menselijke aspecten van het
denken. Wat durven, kunnen en moeten we wel en niet denken, zeggen en
doen? Hoe kunnen we elkaar stimuleren, kritiseren en motiveren om
nieuwe antwoorden te geven op oude vragen of om oude antwoorden te
geven op nieuwe vragen en vice versa?
Het inhoudelijke interactieproces zal lopen via de site en via
thematische bijeenkomsten (presentaties en discussies). Het gaat dan om
reflectie op het onderzoeksproces.
Het groepsproces moet ontstaan tijdens daarvoor bedoelde bijeenkomsten
zoals een borrel, een boekbespreking of een brainstormsessie. De
veiligheid van de groep is vereist voor fundamentele vragen en
diepgang. We zullen elkaar moeten leren kennen, respecteren en
accepteren. Diversiteit is de bron voor creativiteit. We gaan ervan uit
dat er een gemeenschappelijke basis is waarop we kunnen bouwen.
Interesse, kennis en kunde is vereist voor deelname alsmede
samenwerking met andere groepsleden. Juist de groep is tot meer in
staat dan de som der deelnemers.
De derde dimensie gaat over het uiting geven aan de ideeën die we
hebben opgedaan. Schrijven en onderzoeken zijn essentiële onderdelen
van het project. Uiting geven aan ideeën kan in verschillende vormen
plaatsvinden. Het onderzoeksproces moet leiden tot:
- Boeken
- Politieke programma’s
- Artikelen
- Spreekbeurten
- Sketches
- Cabaret

It is looking very much as if Hubberts Peak is nearing. Experts place it within the next decade, with oil production flattening out as of this winter. Maybe a few bumps in production will occur along the line if the Caspian Sea fields will move into production more or less simultaneously with the Iraqi fields, but other then that, oil production is heading down. At the same time, demand is rising faster than anticipated. Since there is no longer much spare capacity anywhere, this rising demand wont be offset by production increase. I'd say our present energy regime is at an end. Although oil prices can be considered high at the moment, I certainly do not expect oil prices to tend downwards for any serious length of time. And to make thing worse still, most oil producing regions are facing serious security issues. Lets explore some of the consequences.
